This post is one big shout out to my sister!
We were talking recently about how easy it is to eat a healthy breakfast but later on in the day… the rails fall off. We’ll eat everything in sight! Is it all about willpower?
Frankly, I don’t believe in willpower. It just makes you feel like an awful failure when you “cheat” or give in. You have to set yourself up for success! And the easiest way to do that is MEAL PREP!
Here’s how I do it:
I (try to) meal prep every Monday. Since I’m lucky enough to have down time at work, I usually take a couple hours on ‘my Friday’ and meal plan for the whole next week so I can make sure my whole day stays within my macros. Then I gather my recipes and make my grocery list and I’m good to go on meal prep day.
This week I made:
- Turkey chili
- Red beans and rice
- White bean stew with turkey sausage (so good!)
- Salmon cakes
- Roasted veggies: potatoes/ broccoli / green beans / Brussels spouts
Now I am not one of those people that can eat the same thing every day. So I freeze a lot! I made about 14 meals here that I can cycle through during the month. But the trick is you have to actually eat what’s in your freezer!
Another “trick” is, I like to use the same ingredients for more than 1 recipe. I added green pepper to the chili and red beans. I added celery to the red beans and also the salmon cakes. I added turkey sausage to the red beans and white bean stew. The flavors are all so different so I don’t feel like I’m eating the same thing all week, but I’m also not buy 1 stalk of celery for 1 meal and wasting the rest of it. You feel me?
Normally on meal prep day, I’ll also prep some hard boiled eggs and today I did some bacon, too. You’ll see some tuna packets in that picture too– easy go to / protein packed snacks 🙂
The WORST thing about meal prep is the dishes!! I use almost every pan in my house.
Meal prepping has become so essential in my life; it honestly makes my life so much easier. I have my macros all planned out ahead of time (which can be a puzzle!!) and I am not tempted (well, as tempted…) to go get fast food or make an unhealthy food choice.
Just a couple days ago, I came home (from a date- check me out!) later than I expected and was starving. I was CRAVING pizza. Oh man, I’ve been craving pizza all week… but I had my meal all planned out and waiting for me at home. So I came home and ate my salmon cake, ranch broccoli (thank you Flavor God!) and salad. And you know what, it was delicious and didn’t leave me feeling like a greasy slob.
